I-94
The Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record, known as the "I-94," is an official U.S. government record digitally issued to nonimmigrants at the time of entry to the United States. It also gives the expiration date of the immigration status which will be either a specific date or a ‘Duration of Status‘ annotation marked as D/S. If you receive a dated I-94, your status will expire on that date. If you receive a D/S I-94, your status will expire on the date listed on your I-20 or DS-2019.
Unlike the entry visa, which only gives permission for the individual to enter the United States, the I-94 represents their permission to stay until the expiration date.
IMPORTANT: An I-94 record updates with each entry into the U.S. Therefore, it is crucial to review, download, and save the record after every entry into the U.S. This serves as a record of one’s U.S. immigration history and ensures that CBP has admitted the individual into the U.S. under the correct status.

Retaining Copies of Your I-94
The online I-94 arrival record is created by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and is an important legal document. It shows the individual’s immigration status and the granted period of admission. F and J visa holders must closely monitor their I-94 Admit Until Date after each international travel. It is the F and J visa holder's responsibility to meet critical deadlines such as their timely departure from the U.S. or submitting a timely application for an Extension of Stay (EOS) with USCIS.
You are required to print out your I-94 each time you arrive in the U.S. and carry the most recent copy with you at all times, even when traveling locally or domestically.
The following are examples of when the I-94 may be needed:
- You are asked by an immigration officer while in the U.S. to show that you were admitted into the U.S. in your visa classification.
- You are asked to show that your period of legal stay has not yet expired.
- You are applying for immigration benefits, such as F-1 Optional Practical Training or a change or extension of your current immigration status.
- You are starting a job in the U.S., and need to show legal status to your employer as a part of the employment verification process.
- You need to apply for a Social Security Number or other related benefits such as a driver's license.
